Two Israeli soldiers were killed in an armed attack at a military checkpoint at the entrance of Hebron in the occupied West Bank, triggering a massive military crackdown across the city and surrounding areas. Israeli armed forces, along with intelligence agency Shin Bet and border police, launched widespread sweeping operations, imposing heavy movement restrictions on local Palestinian residents.
According to the Israeli military, the attack was carried out by two 27-year-old Palestinian relatives, identified as Mohammad Jaba and Firas Jaba. Following the fatal shooting, Israeli authorities marked the attackers' homes for demolition and deployed bulldozers, stating that the primary goal of the operation was to dismantle armed networks and seize illicit weapons.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu threatened harsh retribution, declaring that areas housing militants would be flattened. Palestinian authorities condemned the aggressive campaign as collective punishment inflicted on civilians. Rights organization B'Tselem also warned against the forced displacement of families and urged international action to stop civilian home demolitions.
Tensions across the West Bank have escalated drastically since the outbreak of the war in Gaza. According to the Palestinian Health Ministry, over 1,100 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli forces and radical settlers during this timeframe. The ongoing siege and demolitions in Hebron risk exacerbating violent friction in the occupied territory.
“Israel's policy of punitive home demolitions targeting the families of alleged attackers constitutes collective punishment under international humanitarian law. This aggressive response in Hebron risks further alienating the local Palestinian population and fueling a persistent cycle of violence across the West Bank.”
