A young man named Abu Bakar Siddique has been sent to jail after being arrested for making a threatening and provocative comment on Facebook. Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Mehedi Hasan passed the order on Friday. Sub-Inspector Md. Shah Alam from the prosecution division of Dhaka Metropolitan Police confirmed the matter.
According to the case statement, three photos of a bus were shared in a public Facebook group named 'The Beauty of Rajshahi' on October 21. From a personal account under his name, Siddique commented, 'Alas, it was a big opportunity, only a sniper was missing.' Law enforcement officials swiftly tracked down the account holder using cyber intelligence tools.
Police subsequently arrested Siddique from the Gholharia Dakshinpara area of Paba, Rajshahi. His father was initially held for questioning but was later released after investigators found no connection. The suspect's mobile phone was seized, and a case under the Anti-Terrorism Act was lodged at Ramna Police Station by the Detective Branch's Cyber and Special Crime division.
The investigating officer informed the court that preliminary analysis of the seized phone revealed multiple controversial remarks across various pages. Police noted that they plan to formally appeal for remand to interrogate the accused in custody and uncover whether any wider network was involved.
“This incident highlights law enforcement's zero-tolerance approach toward threats and violent speech online, serving as a reminder of the real-world legal consequences of social media remarks.”
