A tragic road accident occurred on the Dhaka-Mawa Expressway in Sreenagar, Munshiganj, when a passenger bus veered off the road, crashed through the railing, and plunged into a water-filled ditch. The incident took place around 3:30 am on Saturday in the Hasara area on the Dhaka-bound lane. Three passengers died on the spot while at least sixteen others sustained injuries. Emergency rescue teams rushed to the site immediately after receiving reports.
According to the Fire Service and local sources, the Darshana Paribahan bus was travelling from Chuadanga to Dhaka carrying passengers. While attempting to overtake a covered van in Hasara, the driver lost control of the vehicle. The speeding bus smashed into the expressway barrier, crossed over the service lane, and crashed down into the adjacent ditch, trapping many passengers inside the partially submerged vehicle.
Muhammad Shafiqul Islam, Deputy Assistant Director of Munshiganj Fire Service and Civil Defence, said two units from Sreenagar Fire Station carried out the rescue operation. Eleven individuals were rescued and rushed to Sreenagar Upazila Health Complex, while five received on-site first aid. The body of one deceased victim was identified as 55-year-old Rukunuzzaman Ranju from Chuadanga, while efforts are underway to identify the other two victims.
The injured passengers hail from various districts, including Chuadanga, Meherpur, Jhenaidah, Magura, and Dhaka. Witnesses and passengers alleged that excessive speed late at night contributed to the fatal crash. Highway police confirmed that the bus has been recovered and measures are being taken to keep traffic flowing smoothly on the expressway.
“Reckless overtaking and speeding remain major causes of deadly crashes on the Dhaka-Mawa Expressway. Strict monitoring of long-distance night buses and speed enforcement are essential to prevent such recurring tragedies.”
