An allegation of attempted extortion has surfaced against a local Jubo Dal leader who blocked a vehicle carrying television journalists in Nabinagar, Brahmanbaria. The incident occurred on Friday afternoon at the Aliyabad intersection along the Nabinagar-Brahmanbaria road. The accused, Asaduzzaman Biplob, is the former organizing secretary of Nabinagar municipal Jubo Dal, who allegedly harassed the media personnel under the pretext of municipal toll collection.
Local sources reported that a team of television journalists was traveling by microbus toward Dhorabhanga village for news gathering. At the Aliyabad crossing, an individual halted their vehicle demanding municipal lease money. The journalists explained their professional credentials, noting that media vehicles are classified under emergency services and traditionally exempt from such tolls. Refusing to accept this, the collector called in Jubo Dal leader Biplob.
Arriving at the scene, Biplob engaged in abusive behavior and attempted to physically assault the journalists while aggressively demanding money. In an effort to intimidate them, he loudly proclaimed himself to be the nephew of the local lawmaker, Abdul Mannan, MP for Brahmanbaria-5. The overt attempt to extort money using political influence sparked immediate indignation among observers.
Following the incident, Member of Parliament Abdul Mannan expressed profound regret, unequivocally clarifying that he does not have any nephew. He condemned the misuse of his name and instructed municipal authorities to immediately revoke the toll lease. Nabinagar Upazila Nirbahi Officer and municipal administrator Rakibul Islam also apologized for the untoward harassment and affirmed that official steps are being taken to cancel the lease.
“Harassing journalists and using political clout under the pretext of municipal toll collection highlights critical lapses in local governance. While the local MP's prompt denial and administrative pledge to cancel the toll lease are commendable, taking stern legal action against the accused is vital to curbing extortion.”
