Serious allegations have emerged claiming that certain administrative officials and political opportunists are patronizing drug syndicates and teen gangs in Chattogram's Anwara and Karnaphuli areas. Jobairul Alam Manik, Member Secretary of the National Citizen Party (NCP) Chattogram South District, raised the issue during a visit to local puja pandals. He warned that mugging, substance abuse, and localized terror would ruin the future generation unless society mounts immediate resistance.
During his visit to more than fifty puja mandaps across the two upazilas on the occasion of Durga Puja, Manik handed over financial assistance to celebration committees. Addressing the gatherings, he urged parents to remain vigilant regarding their children's whereabouts and peer circles, stressing that negligence at home allows criminal elements to exploit youth and dismantle families through addiction.
Calling for communal solidarity against organized crime, the NCP leader asserted that social unity would strip criminals and drug peddlers of their influence. Manik also officially expressed his intent to contest the upcoming Anwara Upazila Parishad elections as an NCP-backed contender, asking locals for their direct mandate to pursue civic development and eradicate lawlessness.
Several senior district-level leaders of the NCP and affiliated youth wings accompanied him during the tour, including Ridwanul Karim Hridoy, Shahedul Alam Shahed, Jahir Uddin Chowdhury Himel, and Dalia Barua. Local observers noted that curbing juvenile crime and deep-rooted narcotics networks in Anwara will require strict law enforcement free from administrative bias.
“The allegation linking grassroots administrative elements and political figures to drug rings highlights systemic governance gaps. Pairing this critique with an electoral bid positions crime control and social reform as central campaign issues for the upcoming local council elections.”
