Indian External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio held a high-level bilateral meeting in Mumbai. Held on Tuesday, the discussion centered on reinforcing the strategic partnership between both nations. Key areas of focus included defense collaboration, energy security, bilateral commerce, and emerging critical technologies.
Following the meeting, Marco Rubio posted on X highlighting the intent to deepen ties with a specific focus on defense and energy cooperation. US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor described the engagement as very productive, noting that Washington seeks deeper bilateral ties across critical technology, energy markets, and defense manufacturing.
The diplomatic dialogue comes against the backdrop of changing dynamics in India's oil imports. Fresh data reveals that India's imports of Russian crude dropped by around 13 percent in September, marking a second consecutive month of decline. Even with this reduction, Moscow retains its position as India's largest supplier of fossil fuels, with New Delhi ranking as the second-biggest buyer of Russian energy after Beijing.
Despite persistent western scrutiny over Russian oil purchases, New Delhi has defended its procurement as vital for stabilizing domestic supplies and refining operations for export. Geopolitical analysts note that while Washington remains keen on weaning India off Russian energy, this latest high-level visit marks a strategic effort to balance supply security with broader partnership goals.
“Marco Rubio's diplomatic visit to Mumbai highlights Washington's strategic push to engage India across critical defense and energy fronts, even as New Delhi balances its practical energy imports from Moscow with its long-term partnership with the West.”
