SI Among 2 Killed Under Covered Van While Returning with Detained Drug Dealer in Kaliganj

In a tragic road accident in Kaliganj, Gazipur, two people, including a police Sub-Inspector (SI), were killed while returning to the police station after detaining a drug peddler. The incident occurred in the early hours of Friday in front of Kaliganj Government Shramik College when a speeding covered van crushed them. Another sub-inspector and their driver sustained critical injuries and are undergoing treatment.

According to police and local sources, an operational team led by SI Mizanur Rahman conducted a raid at around 2:45 AM to arrest drug dealer Ahid Mia from the Tumulia Bazar area. After taking Ahid into custody, the police vehicle halted near the college, where the officers stepped out to converse with local BNP leader Rafiq Molla. At that moment, a recklessly driven covered van bound for Ghorashal ran over the group standing beside the road.

Following the crash, fellow police personnel rushed the four injured individuals to the Kaliganj Upazila Health Complex, where the doctor pronounced Rafiq Molla dead on arrival. Critically injured SI Mizanur Rahman and SI Javed Omar were immediately shifted to Dhaka for advanced treatment, where SI Mizanur later succumbed to his injuries. SI Javed Omar remains under close medical observation in Dhaka.

The untimely demise of the officer during active duty has cast a pall of gloom over the local police force and community. Law enforcement agencies have initiated drives to trace the covered van and arrest the absconding driver. Local residents have reiterated demands for stringent measures against speeding transport vehicles to prevent recurring night-time highway crashes.
