To curb the transmission of dengue and ensure campus hygiene, the Directorate of Secondary and Higher Education (DSHE) has issued urgent instructions to all educational institutions across the country. In a newly released directive, school and college authorities were ordered to regularly clean classrooms, offices, corridors, rooftops, and restrooms, ensuring no water remains stagnant under any circumstances.
The circular noted that following inspections of educational institutions and residential areas, the need for heightened hygiene and order became paramount. Consequently, both public and private schools and colleges in Dhaka and across Bangladesh have been directed to immediately destroy potential mosquito breeding grounds and remove any accumulated water without delay.
Alongside campus sanitation, institutions have been urged to organize dengue awareness campaigns involving teachers, students, and administrative staff. Signed by DSHE Director (College and Administration) Professor Md. Nazmul Haque, the order has been dispatched to regional directors, district and upazila education officers, and school heads, categorized with utmost urgency.
Public health experts emphasize that students spend significant daytime hours in classrooms, increasing vulnerability to daytime Aedes mosquito bites. Teachers and guardians believe that proper field-level monitoring and strict enforcement of these directives will significantly minimize dengue infection risks among students.
“Maintaining sanitation across educational institutions is a critical and timely measure to curb dengue. However, for DSHE's directive to be truly effective, rigorous field-level monitoring by district and upazila education officers is essential, ensuring that safety protocols are strictly implemented rather than remaining mere bureaucratic guidelines.”
