Four leaders of the banned Bangladesh Chhatra League were detained and handed over to police by Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal from a hunger strike staged by deprived 45th BCS candidates in front of Dhaka University's Raju Sculpture. The incident occurred around 12:15 AM on Friday in the presence of the university proctorial team, after which the individuals were escorted to Shahbagh Police Station.
According to witnesses and police, the demonstration by 45th BCS job seekers began on Wednesday afternoon. Chhatra Dal leaders received intelligence that several activists from the banned outfit had infiltrated the protest. Following this, DU Chhatra Dal Senior Joint General Secretary Nasir Uddin Shaon arrived with fellow activists, identified the four individuals, and contacted university proctorial authorities to facilitate their handover.
The detained leaders were identified as Ferdous Khan, former assistant secretary of DU's Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Hall Chhatra League; Ekram Gazi Hridoy, former vice president of Amar Ekushey Hall; and Habibul Islam and Moniruzzaman Monir, both former leaders of Ashraful Haque Hall at Bangladesh Agricultural University. Chhatra Dal leaders asserted that the handover was necessary to stop banned groups from hijacking student-led causes.
Sub-Inspector Kamal Uddin, in-charge of Nilkhet police outpost, confirmed that the four suspects were taken to Shahbagh Police Station following DU proctorial intervention. He stated that the detainees acknowledged their leadership roles in Chhatra League, and appropriate legal actions will be initiated following detailed verification of their background and motives.
“Campus authorities and law enforcement must remain vigilant to prevent banned political outfits from infiltrating legitimate student demonstrations. Furthermore, maintaining official institutional channels rather than vigilante roundups is crucial for upholding due process on university campuses.”
