SI and BNP Leader Killed in Covered Van Hit-and-Run After Drug Raid in Kaliganj

A police sub-inspector and a local BNP leader were killed after being struck by a reckless covered van in Kaliganj, Gazipur, while returning from a successful narcotics raid early Friday. The tragedy occurred on the roadway in front of Kaliganj Government Shramik College. The deceased have been identified as Sub-Inspector Mizanur Rahman of Kaliganj Police Station and Rafiqul Islam Mollah, organizing secretary of the local Ward 2 BNP unit. Another police officer and their driver sustained severe injuries.

According to police and local eyewitnesses, a police team led by SI Mizanur raided the Tumulia area around 2:45 AM based on tip-offs to apprehend listed drug peddler Ohid Mia. After arresting him, the team was transporting the suspect back to the station. On their way, they momentarily pulled over in front of the college, where SI Mizanur, SI Javed Omar, and driver Rabbi were conversing with BNP leader Rafiq Mollah beside the road. Suddenly, an unidentified Ghorashal-bound covered van ploughed into them at high speed and sped away.

The horrific collision left all four critically injured on the tarmac. Accompanying officers immediately rushed them to the Kaliganj Upazila Health Complex, where on-duty physicians pronounced Rafiq Mollah dead on arrival. Given the severity of their trauma, both sub-inspectors were promptly shifted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital. Despite emergency interventions, SI Mizanur Rahman succumbed to his injuries around 6:47 AM, while SI Javed continues to battle for his life.

Kaliganj Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md. Zakir Hossain confirmed the tragic sequence of events, mourning the loss of a devoted colleague and a local leader. He emphasized that multiple police details have been mobilized to track down the runaway covered van and apprehend the fugitive driver. Strict legal proceedings are currently underway regarding the incident.
