Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) detained a Jubo Mohila League leader named Sultana Begum while she was attempting to cross into India through the Sonamasjid immigration checkpost in Shibganj, Chapainawabganj. She was taken into custody from the border zero-point area on Wednesday afternoon. Sultana, the treasurer of the district Jubo Mohila League, is the daughter of Julmat Ali from the Sheyala Colony area of Chapainawabganj Sadar.
According to BGB officials, border surveillance was intensified based on specific intelligence indicating that she might attempt to flee across the border. When Sultana Begum approached the checkpost, her suspicious movements drew the attention of the on-duty personnel. Upon verifying her identity, she was detained, and during initial questioning, she acknowledged her political post.
Lieutenant Colonel Kazi Al-Amin Apu, commanding officer of 59 BGB, confirmed the incident and stated that the operation was carried out following intelligence alerts. Preliminary checks revealed that Sultana is an accused in a sabotage case registered with Chapainawabganj Sadar Police Station. Following standard procedures, she was transferred to Shibganj Police Station.
Shibganj Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Motiur Rahman confirmed receiving custody of the detained political leader. He noted that official records and pending warrants are being reviewed, and appropriate legal steps, including producing her before the court, are currently underway.
“Following major political shifts, attempts by political figures to exit through border routes have increasingly surfaced. Heightened BGB vigil continues to intercept such movements, underscoring the need for persistent intelligence sharing and checkpoint monitoring along frontier corridors.”
