Driven by extreme poverty and accumulating debts, a pregnant woman named Akhi had made the heartbreaking decision to sell her unborn baby. As the distressing report detailing her desperation circulated in the media, it caught the direct attention of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman. Moved by humanitarian urgency, the prime minister immediately intervened to offer assistance, sparking fresh hope for the family.
Reports revealed that Akhi's husband, the sole breadwinner of the household, had been incapacitated by prolonged illness. Coping with medical treatments alongside basic household needs had pushed the family deep into debt. Facing constant pressure from creditors, Akhi felt compelled to contemplate selling her third unborn child. Following the media report, Additional Press Secretary Atiqur Rahman Rumon was directed to establish contact, successfully reaching out to the distressed family within an hour.
On Sunday, Akhi and her family were received at the Prime Minister's Office. A financial grant of one lakh taka was officially handed over to the family to address immediate distress. Moreover, the prime minister pledged to bear all medical expenses related to her delivery, alongside promising sustained livelihood support and employment opportunities to ensure long-term stability for the family.
The prime minister's rapid intervention in a severe humanitarian crisis has drawn widespread appreciation. Social analysts note that while prompt individual relief is commendable, strengthening universal social safety nets remains vital so that no citizen is ever forced into such desperate measures. Armed with official backing, Akhi and her family are now safely awaiting the birth of their child.
“Prompt state interventions in grassroots humanitarian emergencies reflect empathetic leadership. However, institutionalized social security safety nets must be systematically reinforced at local administrative tiers to prevent destitute families from falling through the cracks.”
