A Jubo League leader was forcibly pulled off a passenger bus and assaulted in Lakshmipur. The victim has been identified as Mezbah Uddin alias Helal, president of the Ramgati Upazila unit of the banned Jubo League and former VP of ASM Abdur Rob Government College Student Union. The incident took place on Tuesday night while he was returning home from Dhaka. Following the attack, police arrested district Chhatra Dal joint convener Jamal Hossain from the scene.
According to police and local sources, Mezbah Uddin was traveling on an Econo Paribahan bus heading into Lakshmipur town. When the bus arrived at the Jhumur intersection, a group of 10 to 12 individuals blocked the vehicle and dragged him out forcefully. He was then brought to the Lakshmipur Balika Vidyaniketan school ground in the Uttar Temuhani area, where he was severely beaten.
Upon receiving the alert, a patrol team from the District Detective Branch (DB) initiated an urgent rescue operation using tracking technology. Shortly after midnight, law enforcement reached the school grounds, safely rescuing Mezbah Uddin and detaining Jamal Hossain on the spot, although the other suspects managed to scatter into the night. Additional Superintendent of Police Hossain Mohammad Raihan Kazemi confirmed that prompt intervention averted further harm.
On Wednesday afternoon, Mezbah Uddin formally lodged a complaint at the Lakshmipur Sadar Police Station, naming Jamal as the prime suspect alongside 10 to 12 unidentified attackers. Sadar Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md. Wahed Parvez stated that Jamal has been officially arrested in connection with the case, while detective teams continue raids to identify and apprehend the remaining perpetrators.
“The abduction and assault of a political opponent directly from public transport highlights persistent security concerns and the volatile nature of partisan retaliation. While such factional friction risks disrupting local peace, the swift response of the detective police in rescuing the victim and securing a prompt arrest reflects effective field policing. Ensuring an impartial probe will be vital to prevent cyclical political violence in the area.”
