Police have arrested a former leader of the banned Chhatra League for allegedly following Prime Minister Tarique Rahman during a footpath inspection in Mirpur, Dhaka. The arrest was made on Wednesday afternoon by Mirpur Model Police Station. The arrested individual has been identified as Tanvir Jomaddar, a former vice-president of Mirzaganj Upazila Chhatra League in Patuakhali.
According to police sources, the Prime Minister visited the evicted footpath area near Mirpur-10 last Saturday. During the visit, Tanvir was seen wearing an ID card around his neck, attempting to trail and get close to the Prime Minister amidst party activists and bystanders. A video clip of the incident quickly went viral on social media, prompting immediate law enforcement attention.
Hasan Mohammad Naser Rikabdar, Deputy Commissioner of DMP's Mirpur Division, confirmed that the card Tanvir wore actually belonged to a local shop in Mirpur. Investigators are examining why he wore that card to breach security perimeters and approach the head of government.
Police are currently interrogating the suspect to determine if there were any ulterior motives behind his presence. Officials added that security protocols and potential lapses around the VVIP visit are also being thoroughly reviewed.
“The intrusion of an unauthorized individual into a VVIP security perimeter highlights critical gaps in public event surveillance. The presence of an activist from a banned outfit near top state leadership underscores the urgent need for stricter crowd management and intelligence screening.”
