An indefinite road blockade has once again been announced on the road leading to the popular tourist destination Sajek. Starting Thursday at 6:00 AM, the blockade will cut off traffic on the Khagrachhari-Sajek route. The announcement came through a joint press release issued on Wednesday afternoon by the Sajek Gono Odhikar Rokkha Committee and the Sajek Karbari Association, signed by their respective leaders Babudhan Chakma and Natun Joy Chakma.
The organizers stated that armed members of the Parbatya Chattagram Jana Samhati Samiti (JSS) must be withdrawn from the area to ensure public safety and end harassment. The two groups initially launched the blockade on October 11 pressing for three specific demands. While the strike was temporarily suspended for two days following administrative assurances and later extended from October 16 to 21 for Durga Puja, the protest is resuming now that the festival has ended.
However, the Parbatya Chattagram Jana Samhati Samiti (PCJSS) has strongly denied all allegations. PCJSS Assistant Information and Publicity Secretary Sajib Chakma stated that targeted conspiracies and baseless propaganda are being orchestrated against JSS, asserting that the claims made by the protesting groups lack truth.
The fresh blockade announcement has sparked significant concern among locals and tourists planning visits to Sajek Valley. With transportation halted, both the regional tourism sector and essential supply chains for local residents face serious disruption unless law enforcement and the local administration intervene to resolve the impasse.
“Repeated blockades in the Chittagong Hill Tracts directly hurt local livelihoods and the tourism economy. Swift administrative mediation is essential to restore stability.”
