The first consignment of uranium fuel for the second unit of the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant in Ishwardi, Pabna, has arrived at the project site. The specialized vehicle carrying the radioactive fuel entered the plant premises at around 10:05 AM on Wednesday under stringent security, where Bangladeshi and Russian officials received it.
Project officials confirmed that the fuel was flown from Russia to Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka via a dedicated cargo aircraft before being transported by road under tight security protocols. Dr. Zahedul Hassan, Managing Director of Nuclear Power Plant Company Bangladesh Limited (NPCBL), confirmed the successful arrival.
According to the schedule mapped out by Russia's state atomic agency Rosatom, all necessary nuclear fuel for the second unit will arrive between October and December. Across nine scheduled flights, 48 additional fuel assemblies for the first unit and 163 assemblies for the second unit will be delivered to Bangladesh.
The Rooppur facility consists of two units, each with a generation capacity of 1,200 MW. Once fully commissioned and connected, the plant will inject a combined 2,400 MW of baseload electricity into the national grid, marking a significant milestone in Bangladesh's energy landscape.
“The delivery of fuel for Rooppur's second unit marks steady progress toward commercial operation, strengthening Bangladesh's shift toward high-capacity nuclear energy to support the national power grid.”
