Police in Singra, Natore have arrested a local Chhatra League leader for fraudulently demanding and extorting money by falsely claiming to be a high-ranking government official's assistant. The suspect, identified as Abu Hurayra, served as the joint secretary of Singra municipal Chhatra League. He allegedly posed as an office staff member of Atiqur Rahman Rumon, the Additional Press Secretary to the Prime Minister, to exploit people under false pretenses.
According to police sources, the case was filed by Abul Kalam Azad, coordinator for Rajshahi and Rangpur divisions of the BNP Media Cell, with the direct authorization of Atiqur Rahman Rumon. Following the registration of the case on Friday night, law enforcement promptly arrested Hurayra from Balua-Basua village in Singra. Investigations revealed that he used WhatsApp and cellular calls to project fake political clout, promising party nominations and extracting money via bKash.
During a press briefing held at the Natore Superintendent of Police's office on Saturday afternoon, SP Mohammad Shariful Haque briefed reporters on the developments. He noted that the suspect admitted to the fraudulent scheme during preliminary interrogation. Police records show that between 2021 and 2023, Hurayra was booked in four criminal cases across Dhaka and Pabna under various statutes, including the Digital Security Act, along with a civil suit in Bogura.
The sensitive investigation has now been officially handed over to the Natore District Detective Branch (DB). Investigators are currently verifying digital transactions and communication logs to determine if an organized syndicate assisted him or if other victims were trapped in similar schemes. Police officials reiterated that strict legal countermeasures will be enforced against individuals misusing the identities of state offices.
“Impersonating top government officials to extort citizens highlights how political influence is frequently weaponized by fraudsters. Swift tracking of digital footprints and impartial law enforcement regardless of political affiliations are essential to preserving public trust in state offices.”
