Police conducted another large-scale anti-narcotics drive in the controversial Gumtighar area near the Dayaganj railway crossing in the capital, arresting 28 people on Friday. Law enforcement stepped up operations in this location, which has long been notorious for illicit drug trade and related criminal networks.
According to police sources, the arrested individuals range from 18 to 50 years of age. A total of 27 adults were formally named, while one minor involved in illicit activities was also taken into custody under youth protection laws. Legal proceedings and charge filings against the detainees are currently underway.
The Gumtighar area gained nationwide attention on October 17 when an armed, unauthorized anti-drug raid by a former state minister sparked widespread outrage, eventually leading to his resignation. Following that incident, authorities ramped up presence, leading to multiple crackdowns, including an operation on October 19 that saw 15 individuals sentenced by a mobile court.
Senior police officials stated that surprise crackdowns and targeted patrols will continue until the area is entirely free of illicit trades. They urged local residents to cooperate with authorities to dismantle the lingering crime rings operating along the railway tracks.
“Repeated law enforcement sweeps in Dayaganj indicate a heightened administrative push to restore order after recent controversies. However, sustained surveillance and tackling root-level drug trafficking remain crucial beyond periodic detentions.”
