A powerful magnitude 7.0 earthquake struck the northern region of Tibet in China on Thursday night. According to the China Earthquake Networks Center (CENC), the tremor sent sudden shockwaves across the Nagqu area, triggering panic among residents who rushed out of buildings into open spaces.
The epicenter was identified in Nagqu at a relatively shallow depth of about 10 kilometers, amplifying the ground motion felt across adjacent highlands. Just minutes later, another related tremor was recorded by the National Center for Seismology at a depth of 15 kilometers, rattling the broader border region.
Following the tremors, local emergency services and monitoring agencies immediately began assessing the impact across the remote mountainous terrain. While there were no immediate reports of major casualties or widespread infrastructural collapse, emergency personnel have been placed on alert to respond to rural settlements.
The Himalayan plateau is located along active tectonic boundaries, rendering the territory highly vulnerable to periodic seismic activity. The event comes in the wake of severe flash floods and landslides that struck the Nepal-Tibet border region in August, leaving local communities particularly wary of further natural disasters.
“Due to high tectonic convergence along the Himalayan belt, Tibet remains prone to strong earthquakes. While a magnitude 7 event at a shallow depth can be destructive, the sparse population density of northern Tibet's Nagqu region often mitigates widespread casualties.”
