Professor Nistar Jahan Kabir of Jagannath University has urged the government to define a clear stance on unapproved madrasas proliferating across the country. In a recent social media post, he expressed concern over the misuse of religious authority to exploit public faith and shield individuals accused of severe abuse, calling for comprehensive institutional accountability.
Reflecting on a recent incident where an aggrieved father confronted a madrasa teacher over the alleged abuse of his young daughter, Kabir criticized clerics who issued retaliatory fatwas refusing to lead funeral prayers for protesters. He emphasized that genuine religious services require honest, virtuous individuals rather than self-serving figures who attempt to muzzle justice.
The academic pointed out that many who claim the mantle of religious leadership fail to demonstrate integrity in either rhetoric or practice. He stressed that individuals shielding abusers demean religion and betray community trust, demanding that authorities hold controversial figures accountable for misleading society through baseless decrees.
Kabir concluded that rigorous government oversight and mandatory registration of religious educational institutions in grassroots areas would significantly curb malpractice. A transparent regulatory environment, he argued, would minimize unregulated decrees and foster institutional integrity across educational networks.
“Ensuring state oversight on religious educational institutions is critical to preventing exploitation, safeguarding students, and sustaining accountability within the societal framework.”
