A 38-year-old man named Kawsar Hawlader was hacked to death by rivals over a trivial dispute in Wazirpur upazila of Barishal. The brutal incident occurred around 10:00 PM on Friday near the Gopalganj-Barishal border area along the Satla-Kandi road. Another individual, identified as Rashed Amin Hawlader, sustained severe injuries during the assault. The deceased was a local motorcycle driver and the son of the late Monafser Hawlader.
According to local sources, an altercation broke out earlier on Friday morning at Satla Ekota Bazar between Kawsar's group and rivals led by Nanna Molla and Swajal Molla. Although mediation talks were reportedly underway, an armed group arrived in the area later that night via a microbus and three motorcycles from Dhaka and Barishal. When the armed group attacked Kawsar and Rashed, they jumped into an adjacent canal and sought refuge in a nearby roadside house. However, nearly 20 assailants broke through the door and hacked Kawsar repeatedly before fleeing the scene.
Locals quickly rescued the victims and rushed them to a local clinic and subsequently to the Kotalipara Upazila Health Complex, where the attending physician pronounced Kawsar dead. Rashed managed to survive by hiding behind a door. The victim's body was sent to the Gopalganj morgue for an autopsy. Additional police forces were deployed in the Satla area to maintain law and order following the killing.
Law enforcement agencies launched an immediate manhunt to apprehend the perpetrators. Later that night, police intercepted a getaway microbus at the Padma Bridge toll plaza and arrested nine suspects. Wazirpur Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md. Rakibul Islam confirmed the arrests, adding that legal proceedings and the filing of a formal murder case are currently underway.
“The swift escalation of a minor dispute into a premeditated and fatal attack highlights growing social intolerance. However, the rapid interception and arrest of nine fleeing suspects at the Padma Bridge toll plaza demonstrates commendable operational alertness by law enforcement. While quick arrests help defuse local unrest, preventing such organized armed attacks requires robust conflict resolution mechanisms and strict prevention of mob violence.”
