A poultry shop worker died tragically after a speeding truck struck a battery-powered rickshaw van in Dhaka's Jatrabari area. The victim was identified as Md. Shamim Hawlader, 35. The incident took place around 5:00 AM on Thursday at the Jatrabari intersection. Shamim was returning to Siddhirganj in Narayanganj with fresh stock loaded from Kaptan Bazar when the reckless truck violently rammed their vehicle.
According to police and eyewitnesses, Shamim had purchased chickens from the wholesale market in Old Dhaka and was heading home. When the van arrived near the intersection, the truck hit it from behind, throwing both Shamim and 18-year-old van driver Russell onto the tarmac. Local passersby and patrol police rescued the critically injured duo and rushed them to the emergency unit of Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where the on-duty doctor pronounced Shamim dead around 8:00 AM.
Sub-Inspector (SI) Mizanur Rahman of Jatrabari Police Station confirmed the incident, stating that the truck was seized immediately after the crash. However, the driver managed to slip away from the spot before law enforcers arrived. Injured driver Russell is currently receiving treatment at DMCH, while Shamim's body has been shifted to the hospital morgue for post-mortem examinations. Authorities are actively working to track down and arrest the runaway truck driver.
Shamim hailed from Kalapara upazila in Patuakhali and resided with his family in a rented house in Siddhirganj, leaving behind his wife, a son, and a daughter. The sudden demise of the family's sole breadwinner has plunged his household into inconsolable grief. Local residents and commuters have once again called for stringent highway monitoring to curb reckless speeding by heavy freight vehicles during dawn hours.
“Reckless truck driving at Dhaka's entry corridors during early dawn hours continues to pose a deadly hazard. Strict enforcement of speed limits and heavy penalties for traffic non-compliance are urgently required to safeguard vulnerable commuters and low-income workers navigating metropolitan roads.”
