Police have arrested Kamrul Islam Sumon (38), a local Awami League leader, during a targeted raid in the capital's Mohammadpur area. Acting on a tip-off, law enforcement officers apprehended him on Friday evening around 6:30 PM from the Mohammadia Housing Limited neighborhood.
According to police sources, Sumon previously served as the organizational secretary of Ward 33 Awami League under Mohammadpur Police Station. He was currently an active member of the same ward committee. Authorities stated that he had been operating covertly following the recent regime transition.
Confirming the arrest, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Mohammadpur Police Station, Abdul Halim, noted that preliminary investigations revealed Sumon remained in regular phone contact with central party figures. He was allegedly plotting to organize violent demonstrations and sudden rallies in the capital under their directives.
Police authorities stated that they are reviewing his record to identify pending warrants or previous involvement in political violence. Legal procedures are underway to present him before the court, while security forces remain vigilant against any unlawful mobilizations.
“This arrest underscores the intensified surveillance by law enforcement agencies aimed at pre-empting clandestine mobilizations by banned or suppressed political entities. Neutralizing local ward-level coordinators is part of a broader strategy to maintain law and order across the capital.”
