Teesta Mega Plan work to begin in 2027: State Minister

The government is taking a major initiative to alleviate the long-standing suffering of the people living along the Teesta River. The State Minister for Water Resources announced that the main work of the Teesta Mega Plan will begin by 2027. The project aims to restore the river so that annual floods do not destroy homes and crops.

According to government sources, the mega plan includes dredging the Teesta River to increase its depth and constructing strong embankments on both sides. This will help control floods during the monsoon and retain water for farming during the dry season. Currently, the project design and funding arrangements are underway.

Millions of people in Rangpur, Lalmonirhat, and Kurigram see a ray of hope in this government announcement. Local residents stated that river erosion makes them destitute every year. They urged the government to start the work quickly and ensure the safety of the people living by the river.

Experts believe that if the Teesta Mega Plan is successfully implemented, it will completely transform the economy of the northern region. However, securing timely funding for this massive project and completing the work while protecting the environment remain the biggest challenges for the government.
