An Ansar and VDP member named Tara Mia, 50, died after falling ill while performing security duty at a Durga Puja mandap in Gaibandha's Sadullapur upazila. The incident occurred on Wednesday afternoon at the Purba Kishamat Hamid Sarbajanin Durga Mandap in Naldanga Union. He was rushed to a nearby hospital where on-duty physicians pronounced him dead. Tara Mia was the son of Nashim Uddin, a resident of Maheshpur village in Faridpur Union.
Chitta Ranjan, a village police member stationed at the same mandap, shared that they were actively monitoring the premises together. Around noon, Tara Mia collapsed near the temple washroom. Colleagues and local caregivers initially provided first aid, but his worsening condition prompted his family to shift him to Sadullapur Upazila Health Complex. Doctors there referred him to Rangpur Medical College Hospital, but as his condition deteriorated on the way, he was taken to Pirganj Upazila Health Complex, where he passed away.
Sadullapur Upazila Ansar and VDP Officer Rekha Roy stated that medical personnel suspect a fatal cardiac arrest. AKM Habibul Islam, Officer-in-Charge of Sadullapur Police Station, confirmed the occurrence and noted that the body was handed over to the grieving family following procedural formalities. The sudden demise while performing civic duties has cast a somber shadow over the local force and community.
This marks the second death of an on-duty Ansar member during the ongoing Durga Puja celebrations in Sadullapur. Earlier on October 18, a 46-year-old female Ansar member named Parveen Begum passed away under similar circumstances while securing the Kishamat Barabari Durga temple in Damodarpur Union. These successive tragedies have highlighted the demanding nature of field security shifts and the need for prompt medical support for frontline personnel.
“Grassroots Ansar members often work long, physically demanding hours during major religious festivals. The sudden deaths of two members within days in the same locality underscore the urgent need for routine health screenings and responsive field-level medical support for frontline personnel.”
