Police have arrested 13 members of an organized mugging syndicate, including a woman and two teenagers, during an extensive 24-hour special operation in Dhaka's Mohammadpur. The development was confirmed by Mohammadpur Police Station late Friday night following coordinated raids at multiple sensitive spots. Indigenous weapons used in street crimes alongside several recovered stolen goods were seized during the crackdowns.
According to official police reports, the haul included three switchblade knives, two sharp daggers, four iron rods, a handsaw-style knife, and four snatched mobile phones. Among the arrestees are two juveniles and one female accomplice. Notably, a notorious habitual offender named Hasnain Hasan was apprehended, who already has at least six pending mugging cases across Mohammadpur, Dhanmondi, and Sher-e-Bangla Nagar police stations.
Mohammadpur Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Abdul Halim stated that the ring preyed heavily on pedestrians, rickshaw commuters, bus passengers, and vulnerable relatives visiting local hospitals. By brandishing lethal weapons or capitalizing on moments of inattention, they routinely looted cash, smartphones, and jewelry. The OC reaffirmed that zero-tolerance police operations will proceed aggressively across the precinct.
Legal proceedings have been initiated against the accused, and they are being produced before the court to be sent to jail. While the coordinated bust brings noticeable relief to local residents amidst recent security concerns in Mohammadpur, community members emphasize that sustained round-the-clock patrolling and enhanced CCTV monitoring are crucial to completely eradicating street muggings.
“The involvement of juveniles and women in organized street crime syndicates across Mohammadpur signals an alarming trend. While targeted crackdowns offer immediate respite, institutionalizing continuous patrols and widespread surveillance is vital for sustainable urban safety.”
