High Court starts delivering verdict in Nusrat murder case

The High Court has started delivering its verdict on the sensational murder case of madrasa student Nusrat Jahan Rafi from Feni's Sonagazi. The verdict reading began today before a High Court bench. Security has been beefed up around the court premises ahead of this long-awaited judgment.

In April 2019, Nusrat, a student of Sonagazi Islamia Fazil Madrasa, was lured to the rooftop of the madrasa and set on fire. Earlier, she had filed a sexual harassment complaint against the madrasa principal, Siraj ud-Daula. She was set on fire with kerosene for refusing to withdraw the case. She later died while undergoing treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital. In October of that year, the trial court sentenced 16 accused to death.

There is intense anticipation and anxiety among Nusrat's family and the local residents of Feni regarding this verdict. Nusrat's family hopes that the maximum punishment for the criminals will be upheld and they will get justice swiftly. On the other hand, the defense lawyers have presented their arguments in court seeking a reduction of the sentences.

Following the High Court's verdict, any dissatisfied party can appeal to the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court, the highest court in the country. According to the standard legal process, it may take some more time for the final resolution of this case. However, citizens hope that this verdict will send a strong message to criminals in society.
