Myanmar must take responsibility to solve Rohingya crisis: Law Minister

The Law Minister stated that the Myanmar government must take the primary responsibility for a permanent and safe solution to the Rohingya crisis. He mentioned that Bangladesh sheltered millions of Rohingyas out of humanitarian concern. However, it is impossible for a country like Bangladesh to bear the burden of this massive population for a long time. Therefore, Myanmar must arrange for the safe return of its citizens.

In 2017, over 1.1 million Rohingyas fled to Bangladesh to escape military persecution in Myanmar. They are currently living in various camps in Cox's Bazar. Despite various bilateral and multilateral initiatives taken by Bangladesh over the past few years, not a single Rohingya could be repatriated due to Myanmar's reluctance. This prolonged issue has now become a major threat to the local environment and security.

The Law Minister also noted that the legal process regarding this crisis is ongoing through international courts. Bangladesh wants the global community to exert stronger pressure on Myanmar. Especially, influential countries need to play a more active role in forcing Myanmar to take back its citizens.

The Bangladesh government hopes that a respectful solution to this crisis will come soon through international pressure and diplomatic talks. Bangladesh will continue its diplomatic efforts until the safe and dignified repatriation of the Rohingyas is ensured. However, Myanmar's sincere cooperation is most crucial for this.
