The government has taken several positive steps to control the prices of daily essentials in the country. Among these, reducing import duties on key items like onions, potatoes, and edible oil is prominent. However, despite these good initiatives, relief remains elusive for the general public. Visits to various markets in Dhaka show that prices of essential commodities are still beyond the reach of ordinary buyers.
Over the past few weeks, the prices of rice, pulses, and vegetables have risen further. Even though winter vegetables have started arriving in the market, there is no sign of prices dropping. Regular buyers report spending more on potatoes and onions than before. Middle- and low-income families are struggling to balance their daily budgets.
Consumers have expressed frustration over the current market situation. A regular shopper at Karwan Bazar stated that even when the government reduces duties, it has no impact on retail markets. Traders continue to set high prices at will. On the other hand, retailers claim they cannot sell at lower prices because they have to buy at high rates from wholesale markets.
Analysts believe that market control cannot be achieved solely by reducing duties or making announcements. It requires regular market monitoring and strict action against dishonest syndicates. To ensure that the government's positive steps benefit the public, administrative supervision must be strengthened at the field level.
