In Gazipur's Sreepur, local activists of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) chased down a flash procession brought out by the banned Awami Jubo League on Friday. The rally started shortly after Friday prayers near the vicinity of the Sreepur Police Station. As BNP activists retaliated and gave chase, the procession scattered toward the Sreepur Madhyabazar area, where eight participants were detained and handed over to law enforcement.
According to local eyewitnesses and police records, four of the detained individuals have been identified as Atiqur Rahman, Ariful Islam, Junaid Mia, and Momen. The identities of the remaining four are being verified. Local officials have not yet confirmed whether any of the detainees hold official executive posts within the banned organization.
Confirming the incident, Sreepur Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mohammad Shahinur Alam stated that the procession took place around the Madhyabazar hub rather than directly at the station gates. He affirmed that lawful steps are being taken against the detainees and reiterated that police are actively deployed to thwart any unauthorized political mobilization.
Following the major political shifts in Bangladesh, field-level tensions remain acute whenever proscribed political outfits attempt public displays. A tense atmosphere prevailed across the Sreepur market area following the incident, prompting law enforcement to reinforce surveillance at vital intersections to prevent further unrest.
“The Sreepur confrontation underscores the lingering grassroots volatility and polarizing friction across regional townships. Direct confrontations between opposing political activists over banned street marches highlight the urgent need for preemptive police intelligence and rule-of-law governance.”
