A police Sub-Inspector and a civilian lost their lives after a reckless covered van struck them during a search operation in Gazipur's Kaliganj. The incident took place early Friday morning in front of Kaliganj Government Shramik College, leaving another police officer and a driver seriously injured.
The deceased were identified as Kaliganj Police Station Sub-Inspector (SI) Mizanur Rahman, 30, and Rafiq Mollah, 45, a resident of the Tumulia area. The injured are SI Javed Omar, 28, and a private vehicle driver named Rabbi, 28. Police said a team led by SI Mizanur was conducting routine nighttime patrolling in the area.
According to Inspector (Investigation) Ashraful Islam of Kaliganj Police Station, the patrol team intercepted and was questioning a few suspects near the roadside. Suddenly, a speeding Ghorashal-bound covered van ploughed into the group, leaving four individuals critically injured. They were immediately rushed to the Kaliganj Upazila Health Complex, where on-duty doctors declared Rafiq Mollah dead.
Due to their deteriorating conditions, both injured police officers were shifted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital. Upon arrival, doctors declared SI Mizanur Rahman dead. The remaining two injured individuals are currently receiving treatment, while law enforcement authorities have launched an operation to seize the vehicle and apprehend the runaway driver.
“Reckless driving and excessive speeding on regional roads during night hours continue to pose lethal risks, even to on-duty law enforcement teams. Strict enforcement of highway speeds along with mandatory high-visibility safety barriers during roadside checks is critically needed.”
