The Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police has arrested Md. Nayan Hossain, convener of Adabor Thana Chhatra Dal, on specific extortion charges in the capital's Adabor area. He was taken into custody during a targeted police operation on Wednesday following mounting complaints from locals and project contractors.
According to police sources, development work on public drainage and sewerage systems run by the city corporation was underway in Adabor. Allegations surfaced that Nayan Hossain and his associates had been disrupting the construction while simultaneously demanding extortion money from real estate owners and builders in the area.
Deputy Commissioner of Tejgaon DB Md. Ziauddin confirmed the arrest, stating that Nayan was detained based on credible allegations of extortion. Meanwhile, Adabor Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Jahidur Rahman noted that while they were aware of the DB action, the suspect had not yet been formally transferred to the local police station.
Local residents and shopkeepers highlighted that disruptions to civic utility projects had created substantial public inconvenience. Police officials reiterated that strict measures will continue against extortion and harassment, irrespective of any political affiliations, as formal charges are being finalized.
“Extortion and interference in public infrastructure by political affiliates undermine civic progress. The swift arrest of the student front leader signals necessary law enforcement vigilance against local harassment.”
