Worker safety urged for sustainable growth in RMG sector

The ready-made garment (RMG) sector is the largest contributor to Bangladesh's economy. However, to sustain this growth, prioritizing worker safety and rights has become more critical than ever. Experts at a recent discussion highlighted that the industry cannot prosper without ensuring the well-being of the workers, urging immediate improvements in factory environments.

Over the past few decades, Bangladesh's RMG sector has expanded significantly, gaining a strong foothold in the global market. Despite this success, challenges regarding working conditions and benefits persist. Experts believe that strengthening safety measures to prevent workplace accidents and ensuring timely payment of wages are vital steps forward.

Labor leaders point out that healthy and secure workers are naturally more productive, which directly benefits the factories. While many factory owners have taken steps to improve safety standards, stakeholders emphasize the need for strict monitoring to ensure compliance across all factories, big and small.

To maintain its global reputation, the RMG sector requires coordinated efforts from owners, workers, and the government. Moving away from a sole reliance on cheap labor towards high-quality, ethical manufacturing will secure Bangladesh's position as a global leader in apparel exports.
