Over eight months after the official X (formerly Twitter) account of Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Shafiqur Rahman was allegedly hacked, the investigation remains in limbo due to the unavailability of key digital evidence. The Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police has formally sought the Ameer's smartphone and related devices. Despite obtaining court clearance and sending at least three letters requesting the handover, investigators are yet to receive the phone.
The Cyber and Special Crime Division (South) of DB is leading the probe. Investigating officers emphasize that a forensic analysis of the physical device is critical to establishing the breach. Examining the phone would allow technical experts to trace login session data, ascertain the exact timing and origin of unauthorized access, and check for malicious spyware or phishing tools embedded in the system.
Addressing the delay, the case complainant Md. Sirajul Islam clarified that they have not outright refused to cooperate with law enforcement, but maintain strong apprehensions regarding personal and political security. Given the Ameer's position, sensitive communications and confidential records stored on the phone raise legitimate privacy concerns. The complainant noted that discussions were held twice with DB, suggesting that forensic extraction be carried out in the presence of party representatives.
The hacking of a prominent political leader's public profile highlights significant digital security vulnerabilities amidst an evolving political landscape. While statutory procedures mandate the collection of evidence for digital forensics, resolving the standoff between legal protocol and data confidentiality remains the deciding factor for moving the investigation forward.
“Without examining the primary device, cybercrime investigations cannot achieve evidential clarity. However, ensuring data privacy for high-profile political figures is equally valid. A transparent forensic procedure conducted in the presence of independent representatives could strike the necessary balance between legal investigation and personal privacy.”
