BNP Vice Chairman and former minister Major (Retd.) Hafiz Uddin Ahmed stated that the most corrupt individuals are currently occupying ministerial and parliamentary seats. Speaking as the chief guest at a reception hosted by Tazumuddin Upazila BNP in Bhola, he lamented that honest and qualified citizens have virtually no room to compete in current electoral contests.
He observed that a healthy environment for parliamentary politics could not be established over the years. However, following recent political developments, he expressed optimism that the country would gradually move past these challenges and establish a fair societal framework where dedicated and honest people can truly represent the public.
Highlighting allegations of widespread illicit wealth accumulation under the previous regime, he claimed that a former land minister accumulated hundreds of luxury residences in the UK, Dubai, the United States, and Canada using public funds. He noted that formal communications from Dhaka have prompted overseas authorities, particularly in the UK, to pursue asset seizures.
The veteran politician added that over the past decade and a half, significant domestic capital was funneled abroad, deeply straining Bangladesh's economy. He stressed that establishing integrity in national politics and recovering laundered assets are essential prerequisites for restoring transparency and democratic accountability.
“Major (Retd.) Hafiz Uddin Ahmed's critique highlights the growing public discontent regarding money laundering and the exclusion of principled figures from political governance, emphasizing the urgent need for systemic reform.”
